It's time.

Guys, if you do anything today, please let it be this.

It's time to start taking action against the torture of animals in Quebec puppy mills.

We are on the verge of a provincial election here in Quebec and your Member of the National Assembly has to know that this issue is top of mind for you, as they hit the campaign trail.

If you're like me, you feel horrified and helpless when you see these puppy mill seizures over and over again on TV. I have 2 words for you: Park Avenue. When enough people come together, their voices can make a difference.

The fact is, the law regulating puppy mills is not, if ever enforced. And the people who are supposed to be enforcing this law, are not. That jurisdiction must be handed over to the SQ, Public Security - so that immediate action can be taken against these "backyard breeders". And tougher punishments can be handed down. Why is this province eons behind the rest of Canada when it comes to animal welfare?

There are animals languishing right now. Dying. In unhealthy, squalid environments. They'll be forced to have puppies over and over again. Which will be sold to pet stores. And uneducated people will go in and buy a puppy based on cute-factor and not give a second thought to where it came from. And the cycle will continue. You know all these health issues I have with Flea? Safe bet a lot of it is based on genetics. Because SHE was a breeder dog. Kept in a cage just to make puppies. Living in her own filth (which is where I think HER particular poop-eating started). Bred for profit and not for personality, health, conformation, disposition. Do you think that person bothered to socialize her or keep her healthy? Well - she came to me with bugs, kennel cough, a poor coat and a suitcase full of neuroses. So, guess not.

Thing is, there is an expansive network of people who profit from this animal cruelty. It's their meal ticket. So, they'd rather you didn't know much about it. Out of sight, out of mind.

And that doesn't sit well with me. And it shouldn't with you.

This will take a couple of minutes. But it can make a HUGE impact. Below is a form letter we have written (it is also available on my page at www.themix.com , if you prefer to print it off and mail it).

Copy and paste it. Then find your Member of the National Assembly by your electoral district or your postal code. Find their address/e-mail and send it off.

Let's make them listen and speak for those who cannot.

A provincial election has been called - as a Quebecer I am requesting that you speak loudly and clearly against Puppy Mills in Quebec and take immediate steps to either shut down or institute stiff regulations for their control.

A section of Agriculture Quebec, 'Anima', presently holds the mandate to oversee and enforce the law (P42) in businesses/breeders providing animals for the pet industry - The recent seizures of abused animals by the S.Q. and animal shelters are evidence enough that Agriculture Quebec and 'Anima' are unable to efficiently control and prosecute people who run these Puppy Mills.

We would prefer that Puppy Mills be abolished - along with the sale of animals in Pet Stores. However, at the very least:

1.The mandate needs to be removed from Agriculture Quebec and 'Anima' and put under Public Security - for an immediate response to reports of cruelty and negligence - and bringing the case to the courts.

2.These Puppy Mills and anyone dealing in the 'animal industry' must be registered and must be controlled - we must implement a registry database and send a message to abusers that Quebec will not stand for this mistreatment of animals.

3. Law P42 (Provincial) must be adhered to and enforced - at present it is ignored.
Quebec is now referred to as The Puppy Mill Capitol of North America - this is not something to be proud of. I urge you to take immediate steps to implement and enforce stricter laws and wipe this blight from our province.

Thank you for your attention to this request.

Sincerely,

------------------

I'm in Ontario, so they don't care what I think, but I'm with you.
Nice to see you creating the stir.
Good luck!

I. too, as an Ontarian, can not participate, but fully endorse what you're doing, N@. Defend the defenseless and give them the life they deserve, not some kind of Frankenstein existence.

One of the most powerful documentaries I have ever seen was on The Fifth Estate. Hana Gartner was exposing puppy mills (in Ontario, I think) and was sobbing uncontrollably. It should be required viewing for all high school kids in Canada.

I will send it off Nat. Even though I don't have any pets at home right now we are looking at getting a puppy as my daughter gets a little older. I think if you can go to jail for torturing a person the same should apply for doing it to innocent animals.
